One option that is attractive to many as an alternate to expensive and restricted continuing care retirement communities is co-housing or shared housing. This is not the communal living of the 1960’s or 70’s, but individuals or couples having some private space and some shared space/facilities.
For Embracing Aging, four residents and the founder, Dene Peterson, of a co-housing community in Abingdon, Va. were interviewed about their experiences. Here are excerpts from their interviews to give a variety of personal perspectives on what it means to actually live in such a community.

Other housing options are discussed with links at Home Sweet Home in Beyond the News: Reinventing Aging. A wealth of practical help and online resources for choosing senior housing and residential care can be found at Choosing Senior Housing.
